So Karen just emailed me the Boxing Week sales – pretty sweet – and departures from London and Windsor as well.

Have a look at her deals.

Remember, she is a licensed travel agent and can be contacted by email – – phone – 519-542-1009 – or visit her in the Kenwick Building, Sarnia.

Just a GREAT Bonus.

I was asked by 3 separate people this week, “What exactly do I get with this card again?”

So I go over everything I’ve said about this card for over 4 years now – and I don’t mind because more people are getting free stuff.

Well, first off – it’s free first year – which is truly amazing when you consider what you get with the card.

Also, don’t get credit cards if you can’t manage your money wisely – you will pay in the end.

You spend $500 and you get a 25,000 point Amex MR bonus.

  1. You can use that for $250 worth of travel. For free. just book the travel on that card.
  2. You can just cash it in for a $200 Amex gift card. For free.
  3. You can just cash it in for $200 in restaurant gift cards. For free.
  4. You can use it for $250 worth of ticketmaster credits. For free.
  5. You can redeem it for all sorts of cool toys – but probably worth less than $250. For free.
  6. You can just cash it in for $200 in hotel gift cards. For free.

Here is our link to apply for the card if you’d like to get referred by us. Thanks if you do!

Those options are fine if you just want to take the money and run. It is free you know!

These last 2 options are the best use of Amex MR points.

A) Transfer them to hotel points – either Hilton (1:1) or SPG  (1:0.5)

You could get 25,000 Hilton points or 12,500 SPG points – very good!

B)    Transfer them to airline points – Avios, Delta, Asia Miles, Etihad Guest, Alitalia, or Aeroplan.

We here focus on Avios and then Aeroplan so you would get 25,000 of either of those airline points.

That is why you see that advertisement “Get a free flight when you sign up for the Gold Rewards Card”

Our pages on Avios and Aeroplan explain more on that, but usually most people would take a free flight anywhere in the continental US or Canada over $250 in travel – but not always.

So there is what you can do with that 25,000 MR sign up bonus!

(For free)

“They don’t care about me anyways”

No, that’s not true at all.

They care all right – care that you pay late, pay foreign transaction fees, make huge purchases and so on.

I had another friend this week have a free trip – flights and hotels.

I have had many co-workers the last couple of years take free trips – Las Vegas, Miami, New York City, etc.

Ya, it’s credit card bonuses – but WHY NOT?

Don’t get me wrong – the PEOPLE care about you I’m sure – we all have feelings and don’t want to see people struggle with debt. But the corporation they work for? NOT SO MUCH.

My point over the last couple of years has been simple.

If you can manage money and pay off debt quickly Why aren’t you taking advantage of all of these offers???

The banks and credit card companies will still make money if you fly somewhere for free – yes they will!

If you pay off debt immediately and don’t pay them any extra fees they may not love you, but they will still give you bonuses!

Can you keep track of a few new credit cards?

Well I did a post about a year ago that shows you a spreadsheet I made up to keep track.

Maybe it is just one new card – anyone can manage one, right? 😉

That last part unfortunately is not true for everyone, so if you can’t manage debt, please do not apply for further credit.

My page on “How Do You do this?” explains how to get started in a simple way.

The point is, they do care about you – but you determine the relationship!

Collecting Hotel points when CDN dollar low.

Well, more conversations this week about this topic.

Tis the season to travel and people want to know how to save money on their trips over the Christmas holidays.

I have done numerous posts on hotel points over the past couple years and it is always worth mentioning.

If you just google “hotel point values” you will get many bloggers take on what  they are valued at, but mostly all valuations end up appox. the same. Here is a chart from “One mile at a time”

Excellent blogger by the way.

There are bank and airline miles posted there as well.

The points is  – these valuations are US cents/point which actually makes collecting these points more valuable for Canadians.

These valuations are based on averages and list 2 of the 3 Canadian Hotel credit cards we can get here.

Current sign up bonuses for the 3 CDN hotel credit cards are:

  1. Chase Marriott Visa – 50,000 points (still hopefully) + free night
  2. Amex Starwood Preferred Guest – 20,000 points
  3. Best Western MBNA Mastercard – 40,000 points

If you go by the above valuations that gives you $400 in Marriott stays, $440 in Starwood stays and ? for Best Western. Best Western is generally 0.6/ point or $240 in stays.

That adds up to $1080 US. That is $1440 CDN as of today, Dec 4/2015.

I have found over the last few years that when booking these places I get about 1 cent per Marriott and Best Western point and 4-5 cents per Starwood point.

That adds up to $1700 – $1900 CDN and probably more realistic.

Starwood is the best card of the 3 because of the point valuations and the fact you can convert those points to airline points as well.

It carries a $120 annual fee, but if you can refer a friend you pick up another 10,000 points or $400-$500 in hotel stays! That part is awesome.

Here is “The Points Guy” chart for valuations – again US based.

Bottom line – our lower dollar increases the value of these points for Canadians – grab one of these cards and start staying for free!
