I had a few conversations this week with some co-workers about hotel points only – just hotel points.
Rewards Canada was the first and still is the best Canadian blogger about these topics.
Patrick, the founder has a great website and you should all check it out when you get a minute.
A couple of workers in different conversations asked me how I stayed in so many different hotels for free.
Well, collecting hotel points, quite simply.
In the last 4 years we have stayed in Best Westerns, Marriotts, Holiday Inns and all Starwood brands.
Yes, some you get started with their c0-branded credit card and spend like crazy and others you look for hotel points bonuses posted by Rewards Canada.
Now, the latest has only 3 Canadian Hotel credit cards left out there as opposed to 5 a year or so ago.
But you know what? That is probably good enough for most people.
We have a page How do you do this that gets you the Marriott and Starwood card.
If you want to stay a few places over the Christmas holidays for free, one of these 3 credit cards will get you started – some take a month to get points, sometimes you get points immediately – Marriott usually.
The Starwood card is $120 a year but you get the most value from this card – many people avoid fees but when you do the simple math it pays you with the most band for the buck!
NOTE – THIS IS A TARGETED OFFER FROM AMEX – NOT EVERYONE MAY BE ELIGIBLE
So, I just received an email on a great promo by American Express!
I will do a full report tomorrow, but it’s basically 25% more points for travel when you use Amex MR points by the end of this year!!!
I haven’t seen this promo before but if you have MR points this is pretty sweet!
Full write up tomorrow.
Here is a link to be referred to the Amex Gold Rewards Card – good for 25,000 MR points!
Check out Karen’s page and get in touch with her!
So many deals out there right now.

Here is one of many deals!
In this hobby/game in order to stay on top of things and find great deals, ways to travel free, etc you need to be active on social media.
I follow many CDN and US bloggers and both Facebook and Twitter and now and then you find something really cool.
Well in the last 2 days I have found 2 new cool things.
The first is an APP called Hopper.
All I can say is add this APP to your phone because it is great – and fun.
It is an airfare prediction tool, and it comes back with what it considers good deals, when to buy, and many more cool things. I can’t do the article justice – give it a read!
The second is really good news for me and others that fly using Avios.
All the bad news last week in the travel blogging world was how BA was getting rid of the 4500 points short haul flight redemption (see our Avios page) and all flights now were at least 7500 points. (in the US only)
This hurt. Our regular flight from Detroit – Orlando or Tampa goes from 18,000 – 24,000 Avios to 30,000 Avios. Because it has a stopover in PHL or CLT or DCA.
You can still get Detroit – Miami for 20,000 Avios if you can find it.
But a great article – probably the most informative and eye-opening I’ve read in a few years alleviated my fears. Thanks to Tiffany at One Mile at a Time.
You need to read the article again as it explains things very well.
Basically it is saying to register with Iberia who also use Avios and because the chart they use for Avios redemptions is pretty nice.
I’ll give you one example but it’s a good one.
Detroit – Orlando driving miles is over 1000.
The flight distance is 957 miles x 2 = 1914 miles or 17,000 Avios in Economy.
You will still have same stop in Charlotte or wherever and fly on American but you actually save Avios and pay an extra $10 in taxes per flight.
This is great news and 2 great pieces of information in the last 2 days!
You have to love Spirit Airlines – well you don’t but you should.
I don’t care if they charge you extra for bags, special seating, boarding pass, whatever.
The prices are just amazing.
All these bloggers hate on Spirit which just makes me laugh.
Check out their latest deal which they email me daily.
So then you check some of these out because they seem tooooo good to be true.
“Oh wow” you say. “I can fly to Florida for a week in February for $71 round-trip!”
There are many more on their site – check them out – for some you do need to be in the $9 fare club…but still!!!
